While we anticipated a smooth flight today, ATIS has issued multiple weather warnings between our current location and the final destination, which could cause extreme turbulence. To our surprise, the service records indicate this plane hasn’t been overhauled since 1964. The low grinding noise coming from the undercarriage is the result of malfunctioning landing gear. Rest assured; we have a retired auto mechanic onboard to guarantee an operable jet. He is currently troubleshooting our gas gauge in the cockpit and will keep you updated on whether we have sufficient fuel reserves for today’s flight. In the meantime, I invite you to look out your window and soak in the great expanse of the Pacific Ocean and the enormous multi-level cumulonimbus clouds that now tower above us. Please take a deep breath as we prepare to ascend over the storm system. We’ve had to make the tough decision to reroute all remaining oxygen from the passenger cabin to the cockpit. This will be a great test of your cardiovascular health and ability to go without oxygen. WINEMAKER NOTES:
2021 was a fabulous vintage on the Central Coast of California with balanced crops and an even growing season. A return of quality reminiscent of 2019. Warm days, but not searingly hot. Cold nights, but thankfully the vines evaded frost. 2021 is a vintage that flirted with extremes but ultimately didn’t go over the edge. This notion might also explain the personality of the red wines we are offering today. The tension between power and vibrancy is striking, but I’m most proud of the soaring aromatics that waft high into the ether. If you’re anything like me (no self-control and a small cellar) and want to drink these wines immediately, I’d recommend a decant on the reds; the more air, the better. The white wine is exotic and tranquil and goes down quickly with a chill in a large burgundy glass. If you’re into exercising self-discipline, all the wines offered today will certainly cellar nicely.

NOTES – AROMATICALLY, THE YOKE IS PULLED ALL THE WAY BACK WITH AMAZING PURITY AND LIFT. BRIGHT RED FRUITS CLASH WITH BLUE TONES WHILE THE WINGS CLIP THE TOPS OF PINE TREES – SAVORY TONES FROM SYRAH AND MOURVEDRE WAFT INTO THE CABIN. THE PALLET IS JUICY, GAINING TANNIN ON THE MID-PALLET WITH ENOUGH VERVE AND MOMENTUM TO GET US TO THE RUNWAY.

NOTES – THE RUNWAY IS SHORT AND SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINOUS PINE FOREST AND STONE. THE THROTTLE IS PUSHED ALL THE WAY IN, AND THE FLAPS ARE UP AS THE AIRCRAFT REACHES ROTATION SPEED. THE PISTON IS BURSTING WITH PURPLE FLOWERS AND BLUE FRUIT. THIS MACHINE IS A TEXTBOOK COMBINATION OF FINESSE AND POWER. THE FINE-GRAINED OAK TANNINS WIDEN THE ALREADY MASSIVE MID-PALLET. BRIGHT ACIDITY LIFTS EVERYTHING UPWARDS FOR A SMOOTH TAKEOFF.
